Boat Details

Sense outlineMatador is a factory ordered Beneteau Sense 50.  Why the choice?  We discovered that almost all our time aboard is spent in the cockpit.  When not in the cockpit I am going up and down the stairs to the galley, the head, for tools, or to the chart table.  The Sense 50 has the largest cockpit of any 50 footer and the cockpit is almost at the same level as the salon.  Other considerations included the fuel capacity (we motor from Cabo San Lucas to San Diego, a distance of 800 miles every year with only one available fuel stop); the boat is big enough to justify the expense of generator, watermaker, and air conditioner.

Why not a catamaran or trawler then?  Looks and motion at sea mostly.  I don’t know enough about either to have any expert opinion.

Why not used?  Probably would have made more sense, but looking back I realized when I bought a new boat and configured it to my liking I generally kept the boat 8-10 years.  My used boats tended to gobble up money in upgrades which were not recovered when I sold the boat a couple years later.  Economic sense and boating don’t seem to go hand in hand.
